I have been diagnosed with a completely torn ACL and a tear in the meniscus after I twisted my knee during a fall. I am thinking about surgery in the next year or so. Meanwhile I would like to continue my fitness routine to prevent gaining weight and running in a elliptical trainer (controlled running) was what worked best for me before the injury. I have no pain now when I do it. Can I continue this? Are there any wear/tear issues that I should be aware of? I did ask my doc about this and he said that it should be perfectly fine for me, but would like to hear from others too.

What did your doctor (or physical therapist) say? Go by what they say. Ask them to give you a exercise program that will help you to avoid further damage.

Should be okay. Just pay attention to it. The slightest of pain could me big problems. As a precaution, you can try ice afterward just to keep any swelling down.

If you doctor say so you should be ok. The ACL tear is already torn so it won’t get worse. What could get worse is the meniscus tear. Riding a bike or stationary bike would be a safer bet for the meniscus tear.

As long as you run straight forward you will be OK, don’t try tennis, jumping or any type of exercise that involves sideways movements. What worked for me was the stationary bicycle.
I also torn my ACL and I waited 8 years before having my knee repaired, I’m perfect now!
    Good luck!
