why would it be bad for your shines? a tread mill is softer than an asphalt road or concrete surface. no, it's not. only if you over do it. then you can get an overuse injury, but you'd get one sooner if you were running with the same intensity on the roads.

Not your shins, your knees. Running too much can cause arthritis over the long term. If you already have arthritis, it can cause damage to your bones (from them rubbing together without any cartilige protection).
Ankles can also (but less frequently) develop arthritis.

Treadmills have much more give than say concrete or asphalt. Too much running will affect you shins, knees, ankles, hips and back. Keep it in moderation and make sure your foot falls aren't "slammers" and you should be fine.

Running in general over time is bad for your knees and shins...however, on a treadmill it is a little less stressful on joints than the uneven terrain and hard concrete outside. Just don't overdo it. Alternate with walking a fast pace or walking and increasing the incline.

Too much of anything, even a good thing is almost always bad for you..

It is actually bad for your knees! The impact damages your joints that is why the elliptical is better for you.
