We are debating getting a treadmill and thinking about location. The basement is probably the safest but if it were upstairs on the second floor in one of the spare rooms, it might get more use. Would running on it upstairs cause cracking or damage to the ceiling below? Anyone with experience on this, please let me know. Thanks.

No problem for the 2nd floor. If you buy a decent mill much of your weight is absorbed by the unit itself. Even without that, the effect isn’t much different from you jumping rope. So if you can do that safely in your proposed location, then the treadmill is safe.
